Cassius Mailula leaves Toronto FC and surprises by choosing an unusual destination
When Toronto FC announced Cassius Mailula last summer, a lot of fans were hoping that the young South African talent would breathe a bit of new life into the Reds' attack. At 23, and with his career reportedly going places, one figured him to be intrinsic in Toronto's charge toward the MLS playoffs. Sometimes, expectations just do not quite go according to plan. Now Mailula is off to pack his bags in a new adventure in Moroccan soccer.

It did catch many by surprise when it was announced that Mailula would be loaned to one of the most traditional Botola Pro clubs, Wydad AC. Not every day does one see a player in ascension in the MLS trade the visibility offered by a North American league for the rather discrete setting of Moroccan football. Yet, this is everything an athlete's career is about, presenting both opportunities and risks.
Mailula showed a good beginning at Toronto FC, scoring two goals and adding one other in just eight appearances. But the minutes on the pitch were restricted, and the Canadian team appears to have moved with consciousness of giving the player another environment in which to develop. Wydad AC hold a prestigious history in African football and could provide Mailula with more playing minutes on the field and a platform to shine for another league, maybe even cementing himself as one of the main names at the Moroccan side.
It shows Toronto FC are willing to give up on Mailula for good if he can prove himself in Morocco, with an option to buy at the end of the loan due to expire in July 2025. This is the chance Wydad will eventually sign a quality striker, which might prove to be astute business given the glimpses of talent Mailula has managed to show in Toronto and at his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns FC.
This would probably mean a changed strategy for Toronto FC. With the team currently in dire need of fighting for a place in the MLS playoffs, loaning out a young and promising player could be viewed as a risky move. It, however, could turn out to be a calculated move to ease the wage bill or make room for new signings that can help the team achieve its immediate goals.
Though 23, Mailula still has a long career ahead, and his time at Wydum AC could be the springboard taking him to the highest level. Moroccan soccer provides challenges different from what he experiences in the MLS—challenges that test and develop different aspects of his game. Further, playing in the CAF Champions League might put Mailula in the limelight in one of the most vital competitions on the African continent.
Meanwhile, Toronto FC have to focus on the fight in the MLS. The team under John Herdman are eighth in the Eastern Conference and very much in contention for a spot in the playoffs. Their exit could be cushioned with the arrival of new reinforcements in the future, or better still, the team will want to have confidence in other young talents that could emerge and become stars in the coming seasons.
Cassius Mailula's future still hangs in the balance, but one thing is extremely clear: he has not backed down from any challenge. Be it Canada, South Africa, or now Morocco, Mailula seems hell-bent on having a career of substance and making a difference in world football. If he proves himself at Wydad AC, this can be the experience he needs to take that next huge step in his career.
Only time will tell if this call to loan Mailula to Wydad AC was the best for all parties concerned. All any Toronto FC fan can do is hope that, no matter what emerges, it makes the club stronger from the experience and Mailula grows as a player. As in football, so in life—the reason for success lies within the boundaries of change.
