Angel City's victory and Alyssa Thompson's brilliance
In the fast pace of the NWSL, Angel City FC nailed a 2-1 away win over San Diego Wave at Snapdragon Stadium, adding an important win to the playoff push. This victory snapped a three-game losing streak that saw them move up to eighth place on 19 points, just one point behind Racing Louisville, who stood at the last team in the playoff zone, while pushing the Wave farther down the table.

A Chess Match on the Field
The high tempo from the very start set a reminder that, deep down, soccer is a chess game. Every move, every pass, was well thought out to secure the needed win. And that's exactly what Angel City did while away to San Diego Wave.
By the 13th minute, Angel City had already shown what their offensive strategy is all about when Messiah Bright delivered a well-placed ball to Claire Emslie. Although San Diego's goalkeeper, Kailen Sheridan, blocked the shot, it was a real inkling of something that would soon unfold—a team famished for victory.
Alyssa Thompson: Budding Star
It didn't take long for the star of the game to sparkle. A 20th-minute long ball by Meggie Dougherty Howard looked lost, but not to Alyssa Thompson. The young forward benefited from a miscue by Wave defenders, who calmly rounded goalkeeper Sheridan to put Angel City in front. Simple in nature, the goal came with loads of meaning: The future is here, and her name is Alyssa Thompson.
But she wasn't finished. In less than ten minutes, Thompson again proved that she is one of the most promising players in this league. She dribbled to the left, cut inside, and finally found space to shoot from her position surrounded by defenders. Sheridan came out to stop it, but the ball slipped through into the hands and then to the back of the net. With that, Thompson doubled Angel City's lead and, more importantly, etched her name in history as the second teenager to score two goals in a regular-season NWSL game.
Dominant in Midfield
With the two-goal lead, Angel City could have sat back. They didn't. The midfield was still under control, and possession was dominated to dictate the pace of the game. Even when San Diego Wave tried to see out a response—dangerous header from Emily Van Egmond rattling the crossbar—Angel City stood firm.
It was a game in which experience blended in seamlessly with youth. A fine debut for Angel City by Katie Zelem and an equally fine assist for Thompson was provided by the energetic Kennedy Fuller, which showed that the team's future is in good hands.
Final Push by San Diego Wave
San Diego Wave did not give up easily. Over the final 20 minutes of the game, the home team turned up the pressure with Delphine Cascarino doing all she could to get the ball in the net. Angel City's goalkeeper, Haračić, was just an impassable wall—she pulled off a big save from a dangerous shot by Cascarino that was sure to hit the net.
Well, this is soccer, so San Diego did manage to score during stoppage time. After a free kick in the area taken by María Sánchez, Abby Dahlkemper secured an accurate header past Haračić, cutting Angel City's lead in the 97th minute. But it was too late; the game was already decided.
