France: The Invincible Powerhouse
France is currently 2nd within the FIFA rankings and comes in as one of the top favorites to secure a spot for the 2026 World Cup. With recent success such as the runner-up finish in 2022 and the 2018 title, the French will make sure to shine in the U.S. With elite players like Camavinga, Kylian Mbappé, and Antoine Griezmann, Les Bleus are bound to be one of the main attractions on American soil.
Germany: The Redemption That Never Comes
After exiting the group stage in 2022, the 14th-ranked team in FIFA, Germany, storms in under Julian Nagelsmann in search of revenge. The famous German ability to sprint in times of direness is expected to bring this team as an underdog into the 2026 U.S. World Cup, where young stars such as Kai Havertz, Musiala, and Florian Wirtz are expected to be part of it.
England: Finally Hopes to Lift the Trophy
Fourth in place, England has been trying to break its spell in the World Cup. The "English Team," after getting knocked out in the quarterfinals in 2022, looks all set with great hopes for 2026. With stars such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden, England brings fast-paced play and a passionate fan base to make it one of the serious contenders.
Spain: Back to a New Beginning
Spain ranks 3rd and finds itself at an important transitional juncture from the golden generation. From their disappointing exit in 2022, they have much to prove in 2026, especially after their recent win in Euro 2024. Talents such as Pedri, Gavi, and Nico Williams will be looked upon to restore Spanish dominance on the world stage.
Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo's Last Dance?
Eighth-placed Portugal is always a force to be reckoned with. Of course, the big question for 2026 will be whether Cristiano Ronaldo is there. Either way, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Rafael Leão, the attacking brand of football that is predisposed by Portugal may make them an excellent force in America.
Belgium: Has the Golden Generation Lost Its Shine?
Much was expected of its so-called "Golden Generation," 6th-ranked Belgium, who will be out for redemption after that dismal group-stage exit in 2022, with Kevin De Bruyne leading from the front. For them, the 2026 World Cup could very well be the last chance at something great.
Netherlands: The Orange Renaissance
Coming in at 7th, the Netherlands have some of the richest history in the World Cup. Knocked out in the quarterfinals in 2022, the team is seeking redemption this time around. With an up-and-coming talent such as Cody Gakpo and defensive stalwart Matthijs de Ligt, this Dutch team may be able to win the hearts of the American public with its attacking brand of football.
Italy: The Weight of History
Italy, ranked 10th, is always a force of upset. Missing the last two World Cups means the Azzurri have something to prove. Coming off their recently won Euro 2021 title, they look to make a comeback in 2026.
Croatia: The Strong that Never Bows
11th-ranked Croatia has just proven to be one resilient team. Coming third in 2022 means that Luka Modrić and company will be one to watch in the U.S.
Switzerland: Consistently Competitive
Ranked 12, Switzerland is consistent, it would appear. Knocked out in the 2022 Round of 16, they would hope for a longer run in 2026.
Denmark: Stronger and More Determined
Denmark is ranked 19th and disappointed many with their exit at the group stage in 2022. Still, the tactical discipline should keep them as one of the teams to watch in 2026.
Poland: Lewandowski's Power
Poland is 26th in the ranking and fully relies on Robert Lewandowski. After its round-of-16 exit in 2022, Poland is ready to set higher goals for 2026.
Serbia: All-out Attack
Serbia is young, bold, full of potential, and currently ranked 25th. After an early exit in 2022, they're looking to establish themselves as an emerging power in 2026.
Sweden: The Scandinavian Comeback?
Sweden is ranked 23rd and failed to make the World Cup in 2022, after their appearance in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tournament. They can hopefully come back strong in 2026.
Hungary: A Long-Awaited Return
The ranking for Hungary stands at 37th, and the country has not appeared in the World Cup since 1986. However, with recent changes and improvements, that may see them return to the grand stage.
Austria: Waiting for a Miracle
No. 31-ranked Austria has not qualified to a World Cup since 1998, but it has been on the rise and could be one of those surprise additions to the lineup in 2026.
