A signing that changes the Pride's status
Orlando Pride makes another push to compete at an elite level. A former Real Madrid player, Hernández is a strategic signing to bring the level of the team up in a more competitive league.
Sporting director Haley Carter broke it down. "Oihane is a technically gifted defender who excels in both defensive organization and distribution out of the back. She is a world-class veteran with a championship mentality from her time with Spain's national team."
What does Orlando Pride receive from Oihane Hernández?
At 24 years, Hernández is already experienced. Shaped at Athletic Club, she built her foundation in Spain before joining Real Madrid. In the club, she played 31 matches and offered two assists.
Hernández also boasts extensive global experience. She was part of the winning team in Spain's title at the 2023 World Cup, playing in six matches and playing a significant role during the knockout rounds. She also played for Spain in the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she took home bronze.
Also, her arrival can instantly impact the mindset of the team. Players who have already experienced what it is like to win at the highest level contribute to elevating the level of competitiveness and accountability within the team. This kind of mentality might be crucial for an Orlando Pride team that wants to be a contender in the NWSL.
Is Orlando Pride leveling up in the NWSL?
NWSL is increasingly also an attractive destination for the best players in Europe, and Hernández is another proof of the trend. Her decision to sign with Orlando is proof of a solid sporting project and of a league which now stands side by side with the world's largest women's soccer leagues.
"I’m excited to join Orlando Pride and start this new chapter in my career. The club’s vision and ambition really influenced my decision to move to Orlando," said Hernández.
