The departure of Jim Curtin from Philadelphia Union sent shockwaves throughout US soccer. While the coach-who has been in charge of the Union since 2014-leaves quite a legacy, there is also a hole that will have to be filled. Curtin was Major League Soccer's second-longest-serving head coach, with only Peter Vermes of Sporting Kansas City having served longer. His impact on the Union goes so much further than the numbers, and now the club is at a crossroads of sorts, with some key decisions looming that will decide whether Curtin's fingerprints continue to be all over the Union moving forward.

A Mixed Bag
He took over the reins at the Union in 2014 and was called upon to handle an uncertain period. In short time, he turned the team into one of the respectable forces of the Eastern Conference, driving them to the title of the Supporters' Shield in 2020. This trophy, given to the team that wins the regular season, symbolized the peak that the Union had reached: a signal of triumph, finally, by Curtin's hand of consistency and hard work.
Curtin was twice named MLS Coach of the Year, underlining his ability to get the best from his players. Under his charge, the Union reached the 2022 MLS Cup final and were three-time US Open Cup finalists. The 2024 season finished on a bitter note, however, as the Union failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017 and finished a mere 12th in the Eastern Conference. This poor showing seemed to seal Curtin's fate with the club.
Player Development: Curtin's Signature Legacy
One of Curtin's crowning achievements indeed has been player development. Having an eye for potential, he helped mold players that would flower into stars not only in the U.S. but on the international circuit as well. Examples include Brenden Aaronson, Paxten Aaronson, and Mark McKenzie, players under Curtin who developed into million-dollar transfers to Europe. Another, Auston Trusty, also moved out of the country, reassuring that trust in building talent with your club pays back in the long run.
Curtin has continued this tradition in the current Union lineup, with the promotion of young players like Jack McGlynn, Quinn Sullivan, and Nathan Harriel to key positions. He even gave 15-year-old phenom Cavan Sullivan his debut, making him the youngest player to debut in MLS history. This investment in homegrown talent continues to reinforce the Union's identity as a club valuing and investing in youth-a core pillar in Curtin's stamp on the team's DNA.
The End of a Cycle
For Philadelphia Union, Curtin's exit marks a turning point. Sporting director Ernst Tanner and principal owner Jay Sugarman began by thanking the coach and showing respect for him, underlining his contribution to shaping the Union into what it is today. Simultaneously, they've stressed that there was a necessity felt: one for renewal. Knowing the finish of the season in 2024 was in an uncomfortable spot, there was a real desire for strategic change as this season's dip was not allowed to become some form of trend.
Renewal Wanted, in Earnest
The Union are already searching for a new coach - a task that is both a double-edged sword as the team must look for a suitable replacement for Curtin, while at the same time trying to retain the current core of the team: veterans like goalkeeper Andre Blake, left-back Kai Wagner, center-backs Jack Elliott and Jakob Glesnes and forwards Dániel Gazdag, Tai Baribo and Mikael Uhre. This new coaching staff will have to wring the best from this group to make the Union competitive again the following season.
This will, no doubt, be a delicate transition. A new coach who comes in with a radically different approach could very easily disrupt the chemistry that exists amongst the team. Measured and well-executed change, however, can see the Union bounce back quickly. The club will have to find some sort of balance, one that keeps much of the identity Curtin built intact but one that also allows fresh ideas to give the lineup much-needed new life.
Jim Curtin's Future in MLS
As far as Curtin goes, his coaching career likely stays on stable ground. A number of MLS teams are still seeking an experienced coach, and Curtin will most definitely draw interest. Atlanta United, FC Dallas, and St. Louis CITY SC are a few of the teams without a full-time head coach. Given his track record in player development and solid results, Curtin is an ideal candidate for any project that tries to combine talent development with competitive success.
Though Curtin may be gone from the Union, his presence will still be felt years to come. It's not hyperbole to say he shaped a generation of players who are now starring in MLS and Europe, and solidifying the league's status as rich ground for developing future superstars.
Philadelphia Union: Building Tomorrow
Opening with Curtin's release first and foremost signals that the Union is ready finally to adapt and make moves in a competitive MLS. Moving into the 2025 season, fans look forward to the Union bringing on a coach that can fill the gap Curtin has left them and elevate them even higher.
