Inter Miami might have Leo Messi, but they're staying realistic with low expectations for the Club World Cup and trying to accept reality ahead of the international tournament. The level of the opponents they will face is extremely high: league champions, UEFA Champions League winners, with squads full of top-quality players.

Even though Inter Miami features experienced players like Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, they are aware that the level of the other leagues their rivals come from is still above that of MLS.

“The Club World Cup has a very high level, and it’s a level we clearly don’t have," Miami manager Javier Mascherano told DAZN this week. "We have to be honest about it, and there’s no shame in saying so. We’ve earned this opportunity, and we’re going to compete and try to do our best.”

Never say never

Still, don't rule out a surprise. Inter Miami will arrive at the Club World Cup on the back of two consecutive wins, while opponents Al Ahly, Palmeiras, and Porto have logged many minutes recently. Additionally, Inter Miami carries the motivation of representing the U.S. league in this inaugural competition.

“We’re a team with little experience in these types of tournaments, but we’re very excited," Busquets said. "We’ll need to stay focused, be solid as a team, bring that experience, and above all, have a bit of luck—because sometimes, you really need it.”

Inter Miami secured its spot in the tournament by winning the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, which FIFA determined was the criteria for the host nation berth while setting a new MLS record with 74 points earned.

They'll face Al Ahly on June 14, FC Porto on June 19, and Palmeiras on June 23 in Group A of the competition.
