Match context

The New York Red Bulls are making their first trip to Providence Park since 2019, and that was when they last beat Portland on the road. Both clubs are in the thick of playoff races in their respective conferences.

Portland is looking to solidify its playoff position in the East, while New York is fighting for a playoff spot in the West.

That all makes for a really important late-season cross-conference match where the result could mean something for playoff positioning for both sides.

Earlier this season the two teams met in Houston (at Shell Energy Stadium), in a match that ended 2–2, and Houston’s Amine Bassi scored first followed by a stoppage-time equalizer by Ondřej Lingr.

For Houston, forward Ezequiel Ponce is one of their greatest scoring threats, as is midfielder Jack McGlynn’s influence through scoring and assisting.

For Colorado, Rafael Navarro leads the attack and Djordje Mihailovic is instrumental in the midfield. Colorado’s most recent match was 4–2 loss to Sporting Kansas City on the road.

Head-to-head

There are very few matches between Portland and the New York Red Bulls. Historically, the New York based club is ahead with 5 wins; Portland has 2 wins, and 4 draws. Recent matches have favored the Red Bulls however.

Prediction

This is likely to be a close, low-to-medium scoring game. Home advantage and Portland’s new attacking signings provide the Timbers a slight advantage on paper, but New York’s attacking experience (Choupo-Moting / Forsberg when available) means it's by no means settled.

Data-led previews have Portland as the slight favorite, while a draw is certainly a possibility.

Match prediction: Portland 1–1 New York.
