Avery Patterson's immediate impact
When the Dash selected Avery Patterson as their first pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft, expectations were high-but the young defender quickly exceeded them. In her inaugural season, Patterson appeared in 28 matches-a remarkable feat for any rookie. Her stats speak volumes: 36 successful tackles, 12 blocks, and contributions to eight clean sheets.
Most impressive, however, is her consistency. Up against some of the best forwards in the world, Patterson never once dropped her standards. Her game-reading ability and precise timing in defensive situations became defining traits.
Interim General Manager Erik Ustruck didn't mince words in his praise: "Avery had a stellar rookie season, and we saw her impact every week. She brings real value to our roster with her versatility and a competitive spirit that elevates the team." From promising to indispensable
But Patterson didn't stop at shining defensively; she showed her offense, too. She scored her first professional goal in November against Bay FC, adding two assists throughout the season.
But also, her mentality of winning is something precious for the Dash. "I'm excited to accomplish what we can in the years to come. I believe in this team and in our future," Patterson said, expressing her belief in the club and what they can achieve.
Numbers don't lie
Avery Patterson’s rookie-season stats underscore that her contract extension was well-deserved. Among the team’s defenders, she led in blocks and ranked among the best in tackles. Her adaptability — whether shielding the box or joining attacking plays — is the kind of asset every coach dreams of.
A college legacy as the foundation
Before making her mark in the NWSL, Patterson was already a star at the University of North Carolina, scoring 27 goals and providing 23 assists across 72 starts to play a pivotal role in the team's system. She netted two goals in the 2022 NCAA Women's College Cup final to leave no doubt about her readiness for bigger challenges.
This collegiate experience was important in smoothly transitioning her into the professional level. Coupled with her call-ups to various U.S. Youth National Teams, it molded a player with exceptional maturity and vision on the field.
