The Houston Dynamo have signed Obafemi Awodesu to the first team, locking in the 23-year-old defender on a deal through 2025 with options to extend through 2027. This is a reflection of the commitment by the club in trusting talent from its own pipeline and the MLS NEXT Pro system.

A defender that grew up step by step

Awodesu had already demonstrated that he was a very solid defender before his starring performances in MLS NEXT Pro with Dynamo 2. The player emerged from the Philadelphia Union academy and made a name for himself at Penn State, starting 65 matches, scoring six goals, and earning back-to-back Big Ten Defender of the Year in 2022 and 2023. The double acknowledgment of that was no accident. Awodesu couples defensive consistency with leadership skills, something that the Houston Dynamo did not miss out on when deciding to promote him.

Awodesu was an essential figure in Dynamo 2 this 2024 season, racking up 2,520 minutes of playing time, most in the league. In addition, he also contributed to two goals and one assist offensively. He has proved dangerous in set pieces and at the right moments.

Pat Onstad, Dynamo’s president of soccer operations, highlighted the player’s impact: "Femi’s competitiveness, leadership, and desire to become a professional player at the highest levels have been impressive. He has improved his skills to a level that gave us confidence he can take the next step and contribute to our group."

What Awodesu brings to Dynamo in 2025

Obafemi Awodesu is a reinforcement that comes to fill in the gaps. Houston already had center backs such as Micael, Erik Sviatchenko, and Daniel Steres; he will contribute youth, energy, and much to grow. Now he has the advantage of adapting to the Dynamo style since a while ago in Dynamo 2 and thus quickly into the first team's setup.

A commitment to internal developmen

Awodesu's promotion to the first team is a clear indication that Houston Dynamo are committed to using the MLS development system to build long-term talent. This method, apart from reducing reliance on pricey international signings, builds stronger connections between the club and their fan base as they love to see "homegrown" players shine on the big stage.

Onstad emphasized the pride in Awodesu’s progress: "He is another success story from our player development pathway. We’re excited for Femi to continue growing with our club, and we’re looking forward to his professional future."

This pathway, from academies through to MLS NEXT Pro, is becoming a key element for clubs looking to build sustainable and competitive rosters. Awodesu is further proof that investing in internal development can bring great rewards.
