With the MLS returning to action, we have El Trafico tonight, the LA derby between LAFC and the Galaxy.
However, the transfer market is more active than ever, especially for the Columbus Crew, who have already completed three crucial signings in just over a week as they look to strengthen their push for the top of the Eastern Conference.
Recently, the Crew strengthened their squad by signing two defenders and a forward, reinforcing their determination to compete for the MLS Cup.
Now, once again, the Columbus Crew have signed an experienced defender, a former Manchester United player, and if you played FIFA 17, a brilliant and overpowered centre-back.
Columbus Crew acquires defender Eric Bailly
That's right, Columbus Crew have signed Ivorian defender Eric Bailly from Real Oviedo.
Some fans might remember him from his overpowered FIFA 17 and FIFA 18 Ultimate Team cards, where he was nearly impossible to afford.
Now, MLS welcomes a player with extensive Premier League experience, who also spent last season competing in Spain's LaLiga.
According to the official Columbus Crew website:
“The Columbus Crew have acquired free agent defender Eric Bailly. The footballer’s contract is guaranteed through June 2027 with Club options for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 MLS campaigns. He will occupy an international roster slot and will officially join the Crew roster following receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.”
Crew General Manager Issa Tall said this about the club’s new signing:
“Eric brings a winning mentality and valuable experience that will benefit our group both on and off the field. We look forward to integrating him into the team as we continue pushing toward our goals in the second half of the season.”
This season, Eric Bailly played 16 games with Real Oviedo, recording one goal and three yellow cards.
After his first year at Manchester United, Bailly hasn’t played the same type of incredible football as he did.
Due to a series of injuries, Bailly's performances and playing time began to decline, eventually leading to a move to Olympique de Marseille.
There, he looked as though he might rediscover the form that made him such a standout in England, but injuries once again got in the way.
Since then, he has bounced from club to club before ultimately arriving in MLS as a free agent.
That said, Columbus Crew fans shouldn't be discouraged after reading all of this.
If Bailly can stay healthy, and that's the biggest question mark, he absolutely has the quality to be the center back this team has been looking for.
