Angel City parts ways with Becki Tweed after a disappointing 2024 season

Angel City FC announced the departure of head coach Becki Tweed, who had been with the club since the beginning of this promising but question-mark-filled cycle. Tweed, an interim head coach from 2023, did something few could have predicted when he led the team on a historic undefeated streak to secure Angel City's first-ever playoff appearance. The slide in performance throughout the 2024 season was enough to see her leave the team.

For a club that is still building its identity within women's soccer, Tweed's departure symbolized not only technical issues but the unstoppable hunt for stability and results. The transition now flows under new owners Willow Bay and Bob Iger, who have begun to move the chess pieces to make Angel City a reference point on and off the pitch.

From interim coach to the hope for a new cycle

An interim appointment in June 2023 following the departure of Freya Coombe, Becki Tweed wasted little time in making her mark. Her record of 6 wins, 1 draw, and 4 losses snapped an irritating five-game winless streak to propel Angel City into its first-ever playoff spot, it seemed at the time, was a new era beginning for the club.

The knockout-stage defeat to Seattle Reign 1-0 did not overshadow the feat. On the contrary, it brought optimism. Tweed's strong performance and ability to lift a struggling team convinced the board to appoint her as permanent head coach for the 2024 season.

But the enthusiasm quickly turned to frustration. The 2024 season revealed weaknesses that Tweed was unable to correct. With a record of 7 wins, 13 losses, and 6 draws and a goal differential of -13, Angel City finished 12th in the overall standings, eight points away from the playoff zone. To make things worse, the team lost three points in October due to a salary cap violation, effectively ending any chance of a playoff berth.

Angel City technical director Mark Wilson put into words the club's feelings toward Tweed: "Becki has been an integral part of Angel City FC, showing exceptional work ethic, deep care for her team and players, and an unwavering desire to learn and grow." Notably, Wilson also mentioned Tweed's determination, adding that even in a season filled with hardships, she managed to leave a good impression on players and staff. Becki Tweed's exit was not an isolated move; just a week earlier, former general manager Angela Hucles also parted ways with the club, signaling a full restructuring at the top. These changes come at a crucial time, as Angel City seeks to solidify its operations and results under new ownership.

Willow Bay and Bob Iger, who took over in July, have already shown their intent to bring structural changes. One key decision was securing a permanent training facility at California Lutheran University, previously used by the Los Angeles Rams. This represents a significant step toward professionalizing the club, which had been operating out of temporary facilities.
