FC Dallas shook up the market for Major League Soccer's transfer window with the addition of Ecuadorian forward Anderson Julio from Real Salt Lake in exchange for defender Sam Junqua and up to $500,000 in General Allocation Money. Of that, $400,000 is guaranteed, with an additional $100,000 tied to performance incentives. Julio also takes an international roster spot with Dallas for the 2024 season.

Julio comes into Dallas with a track record mixed between flashes of brilliance and inconsistency. Most recently, the attacking player scored 9 goals in 35 matches at an average of 0.3 goals per game. He finds the net every 167 minutes on average, but his finishing at the new club really needs to be sharpened with such a low conversion rate of 16%. “Julio is a player we’ve been tracking for a long time,” said Dallas sporting director André Zanotta. “He’s played against us and scored in some of those games. Bringing him to Dallas is really important for us.”
This confidence underlines the belief of the club in Julio as a potential key piece to strengthen their offense. However, he will have to capitalize on more opportunities if he is to justify such expectations, having missed several big chances in the previous season. Even so, his proven adaptability to MLS is a promising advantage for Dallas.
Real Salt Lake bolsters defense with Sam Junqua
On the other side of the deal, Real Salt Lake reinforced their backline by bringing on board Sam Junqua. The 28-year-old center-back has played a cumulative 133 matches in the Major League Soccer with Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas. He comes into view as a very sure addition for a roster preparing for an engaging 2024.
Adding depth and versatility to the backline — with a veteran who's been in this league for six seasons — is required," said RSL's director of soccer, Kurt Schmid. "As we prepare for multiple competitions and a stretch of early-season matches, we look for Sam to help us solidify things."Money Talks — General Allocation Money
Of course, the pièce de résistance includes as much as $500,000 in GAM. To Real Salt Lake, that cash equals financial flexibility to either adjust salary cap or bring in new talent. That investment in Julio shows a vote of confidence from FC Dallas that this attacking midfielder can get off to an instant impact.
This is the kind of financial juggling that has become the hallmark of MLS's singular ecosystem, where technical performance must be balanced with strategic planning in order to remain competitive.
Looking ahead to 2024
As such, with the season set to begin on February 22, FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake will soon know whether these new additions work well or not on the field. Dallas is away to the Houston Dynamo, while RSL starts at home against the San Jose Earthquakes. These games present a litmus test to both teams in the form of their preseason moves, hence setting a tone for what the teams are going to do in the season.
