Earlier today, we discussed why Alexis Sanchez’s signing could benefit CF Montreal, but also argued that designating him as a Designated Player may not be the best option.

The truth is that it doesn’t matter how, but the Impact needs every bit of help they can get to try to reverse their current situation in the MLS standings.

Nevertheless, during a recent interview, Alexis Sanchez explained why he chose to play in the MLS and not return to Chile or another club. To be clear, the Messi effect is real, guys; you’ll see in his statement.

Alexis Sanchez explained why he decided to play for CF Montreal.

The first thing the former FC Barcelona player said was that he is still a competitive animal, and a return to the MLS means he would battle against top-tier talents in the league.

“I’m very competitive, and I saw that all the world-class stars were coming to MLS: Messi, Suárez, Lewandowski… So I said, ‘Why not come and give myself a chance to compete and face great world-class players?”

With this, the Chilean forward also explained that coming to North America meant closing a chapter in Europe.

He also said that arriving in Canada and playing for CF Montreal is a new challenge, and confirmed he wants to be champions with the Impact.

“I played for the best clubs in the world: Manchester United, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter. Coming to Canada is a challenge. Montreal is a club that trusted me; one of the reasons I came here is to help the club grow and become champions.”

However, no one can deny that bringing a 37-year-old veteran could be more of a struggle than a relief. During his last year in European football, Sanchez has often been out of games due to injuries.

Still, one thing is clear about the two-time Copa America champion: Sanchez is not an injury-prone player, which is a major advantage for Montreal, especially compared to other veterans who joined the league and struggled with frequent injuries.

And for those who questioned his fitness, the “Wonder Kid” said:

“I always say that my body is like that of a 25-year-old”

Even though Montreal needed to make a signing, we'll have to see how Alexis Sánchez performs to know whether the Canadian club made a good investment.

We already know that the former Arsenal player came here to win a championship, not to relax, so that's a positive sign, as he'll put all his effort into first getting the team out of the bottom of the standings and then fighting for the title.
