FC Dallas, LA Galaxy agree to trade for Edwin Cerrillo
By Anthony Rotz
Still under their transfer ban, the Galaxy are finding ways to add to the team.
FC Dallas and the LA Galaxy have reached an agreement that will send defensive midfielder Edwin Cerrillo to Los Angeles for an undisclosed return.
Cerrillo, 22, has made 94 appearances for Dallas across five seasons. Cerrillo came through Dallas’s vaunted academy and is yet another product that will yield them a return.
A Sensible Fit
In Los Angeles, Cerrillo will slide into his natural 6 role for Greg Vanney, who is suddenly in need of reinforcements there.
Vanney’s first-choice defensive mid, Gastón Brugman suffered a knee injury in the Leagues Cup tie against Club León which is expected to sideline him indefinitely.
Brugman has been one of the key bright spots during a morbid Galaxy season, starting 25 of 26 matches this season. The club is struggling on both ends of the pitch and is near the bottom of the Western Conference, even though the Uruguayan is performing well.
While the stellar performances have led to little team success, finding a capable replacement for Brugman is crucial if the Galaxy are to salvage anything from 2023. Cerrillo is not the refined passer Brugman is, but he does excel at retaining possession and covering open spaces. A trait that should serve his midfield partners, Riqui Puig and Marky Delgado well.
