After less than a year away, Maxi Moralez is back in a New York State of Mind.

NYCFC is closing in on resigning club legend Maxi Moralez. Moralez, 36, left the Empire state following the conclusion of NYCFC’s 2022 campaign. Moralez signed with Racing Club, his boy hood side but it would not be the romantic reunion he envisioned. Having signed through 2024, Moralez made 22 largely unimpressive appearances for Racing, leaving both sides wondering if this was a good idea. Eventually, both sides agreed it wasn’t, and Moralez will have his contract terminated by mutual consent.

Before his tumultuous spell in his native Argentina, Moralez was a stalwart in the NYCFC starting IX. Having arrived in 2017, Moralez made 194 appearances, scoring 35 goals and assisting 69 times. As captain, Moralez led NYCFC to the 2021 MLS Cup and 2022 Campeones Cup.

NYCFC is currently 13th in the Eastern Conference on 26 points, putting them four points out of a playoff spot. With only 25 goals scored on the season, NYCFC has scored the third-fewest in MLS. Nick Cushing will hope that age and seven months away haven’t diminished too much power from one of the league’s greatest-ever midfield creators.
