USMNT star Antonee Robinson linked with move to Serie A
Antonee Robinson has been very impressive in the World Cup so far with the USMNT conceding just one goal which was a Gareth Bale penalty after a rash Walker Zimmerman challenge.
The Sun has reported that Inter Milan are looking at the Fulham defender, amid a flurry of stories linking US players with potential moves to Serie A.
AC Milan came in for Robinson on transfer deadline day in January 2020. However, due to a problem with his medical and time running out, the deal was not completed. Robinson played for Wigan Athletic in the Championship at the time, and subsequently moved to Fulham that summer.
Robinson has been playing well for the Cottagers this season, striking up a great partnership with fellow countryman Tim Ream. They are currently an impressive ninth in the Premier League.
Inter have been linked with Christian Pulisic, but with their system of playing with wing-backs, Robinson would be a better fit for the Italian side.
Robinson is nicknamed ‘Jedi’ because of his love of Star Wars, and it could be time for this apprentice to achieve the rank of master by plying his trade with the great Italian side. He has so far only played in England with Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan and Fulham, so moving to a new country would be great for his development.
Is it time for Robinson to move on?
Inter have a history of having great defenders, and the club’s only retired numbers (4 and 3) are of Javier Zanetti and Giacinto Facchetti respectively. Both are legendary full-backs, so to join a club with such history would be very tempting for Robinson.
The club are looking for competition with their current left-back Federico Dimarco. The Nerazzurri have a star-studded line-up with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez up front, so Robinson would fancy himself crossing the ball in for strikers with such pedigree.
Simone Inzaghi’s side is currently fifth in Serie A and is still in the Champions League, preparing to face Porto in the round of 16 when Europe’s premier competition returns. Fulham is doing well in the Premier League this season but is unlikely to play in Europe, which at Inter he would expect to do every season.
Two of Robinson’s USMNT teammates are currently in Italy, Sergino Dest at AC Milan and Weston McKennie at Juventus. However, both players have not played as much as they would have liked – which would be the only concern with Robinson’s move to Inter, as at 25 game time is crucial for the player.
However, if he wants to get to the highest level then he must take risks and test himself at the biggest clubs. Chances to join sides like Inter do not come around very often, so Robinson must take this chance whilst he still can. Having come so close to joining AC Milan, he will probably feel he has unfinished business in Italy and to be able to play for their rivals Inter would make a great story.
