Uruguay forward Luis Suarez planning move to MLS
Luis Suarez was linked with a move to MLS last summer. However, the forward ultimately returned to Uruguay, rejoining his first club Nacional where he scored eight goals in 14 appearances, helping them win the Uruguayan Primera División. His contract with the club expires on the 31st of December so there is a lot of speculation about where Suarez will go next.
The German website Sport Bild has revealed that the manager of the Brazilian club Gremio, Alberto Guerra, believes he will go to MLS, saying: “We made a proposal that has already been rejected. Suárez was grateful because it was a serious offer but his plan is to play in MLS.”
The likely destinations are Inter Miami or LA Galaxy. The Herons are in need of a star striker after Gonzalo Higuaín’s retirement. However, they have been linked with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi recently so it will be interesting to see which legendary forward they go for.
The club owned by David Beckham will be looking to add big names to the side, and Suarez being a former Liverpool and Barcelona player means he would definitely fit that mould. Miami will be looking to go further in the playoffs in 2023, after they lost 3-0 to New York City FC in the first round last season. Suarez is a winner and will undoubtedly improve Phil Neville’s side even at age 35.
Which MLS club could sign Luis Suarez?
LA Galaxy has always had high-profile players, they had Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robbie Keane and Steven Gerard. Suarez could be the next one. The Galaxy lost 3-2 to their local rivals Los Angeles FC in the Western Conference Semi-Finals this year. LAFC went on to win MLS Cup so the Galaxy signing Suarez will be a big statement of intent ahead of the 2023 season.
Suarez would also add a bit of spice to El Tráfico, as fans will remember his bite on Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Galaxy could have a deadly duo of Suarez and Javier Hernández up front, which will certainly excite fans. They have not won MLS Cup since 2014 and Suarez could be the final piece in the jigsaw for Greg Vanney’s side.
Suarez’s focus will be on his country
At the moment, Suarez’s head will be with his national team. Uruguay is in a Group H of the World Cup with South Korea, Ghana and Portugal. The fixture against the Ghanaians could be a feisty one, as Suarez’s handball against their country at the 2010 World Cup is not forgotten.
It is likely to be the last World Cup for Suarez and will be vying to make it a memorable one. Hopefully, it will be remembered for the right reasons this time.
For Nacional last season Suarez showed he still has talent even at his age. During his last season in Europe which was the 2021/22 season, he managed to score 11 goals in 35 La Liga appearances for Atletico Madrid. Suarez is not getting any younger but his goalscoring record is still good and he still has the drive to succeed.
