Final 2021 MLS Western Conference Power Rankings
By Ivan Ornelas
3: Sporting Kansas City
Led by the goals from MVP candidate Daniel Salloi and his fellow winger Johnny Russell, Sporting Kansas City have dealt with waves of injuries and still were in a fight to the end for the top seed. If Tim Melia gets hot and saves the WWE moves, they have a chance at the final.
4: Portland Timbers
The Western Conference has three true contenders, and the Timbers are the clear choice for the best of the rest. Portland will go as far as Sebastian Blanco will take them, but keep an eye on Dairon Asprilla and the Chara brothers.
5: Minnesota United
Minnesota United didn’t look great this year in comparison to their Conference Final run in the playoffs the previous season. They remain an experienced squad that can be tricky customers in tournament settings. Neutrals will lament their road team status because that means no Wonderwall barring a few upsets.
6: Vancouver Whitecaps
The British Columbia-based club turned their season around with some key signings, led by Scottish midfield maestro Ryan Gauld. While not the strongest team, it’s hard to point at a weakness and their goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau is one of the most inform in the league.
7: Real Salt Lake
Have to start with the elephant in the room: Real Salt Lake ultimately made it to the playoffs on an admitted blown call in their game against Sporting Kansas City. Some might say they are undeserving of their playoff status, but here they are. RSL are here for a good time, not a long time.
