New York City FC vs Atlanta United preview — NYCFC’s midfield is cause for concern

Though NYCFC’s midfield has been a source of strength for most of the 2021 MLS season, injury and suspension have hit them hard recently and have left the Night Owls without many options. Last week, it was revealed that box-to-box starlet Keaton Parks would miss the remainder of the 2021 calendar year after having surgery to repair a blood clot in his leg. Nicolas “Cacha” Acevedo is also out due to an adductor injury and could miss the entirety of the playoffs. To make matters worse, Gedion Zelalem — who had promising stints off the bench — was sent off in the first half of NYCFC’s 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union on Decision Day, making him ineligible for the First Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Logic would state that moving James Sands back into the midfield to partner with Alfredo Morales is the proper decision, allowing the young Tayvon Gray to fill at right back. Unfortunately, Sands could very well be needed at center back depending on the status of Alex Callens, who reportedly sustained an injury while on international duty with Peru.

This lack of options could potentially pose a serious issue to Deila’s midfield setup. Previously, the Norwegian manager has hinted that polarizing winger Jesus Medina could potentially line up as a No. 8 in the past. This move wouldn’t cripple NYCFC’s attack either, as the Boys in Blue have plenty of firepower up top. Medina has also largely been lethargic when called upon since the halfway point of the season, making his potential absence from any such attacking trident not cause for immense concern from the City faithful.
