It has been quite the year for Matt Turner, who has turned his tremendous form in MLS with the New England Revolution into a summer call-up with the United States national team. And now ahead of the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday night, Turner can freely admit that this Revolution team is something special.

And for his part, Turner is head and shoulders the best goalkeeper in all of MLS, his form in the recently concluded CONCACAF Gold Cup a major reason why the United States exceeded expectations and won the tournament. Turner was named the top goalkeeper of the tournament, producing several highlight saves as the United States beat Mexico 1-0 in the final.

As for his MLS play, Turner has been a major reason why the Revolution are pacing the top of the table. He credits head coach Bruce Arena with building a team based on balance and depth. Arena, the winningest coach in MLS history, is now in his third season with the Revolution.

Matt Turner appeared on Tuesday afternoon’s edition of ‘Counter Attack’ on Sirius XM. He was asked by host Brian Dunseth his thoughts on the New England Revolution’s strong season, which has surprised many around MLS and if Arena was building a team in his identity.

“I’d say so, I’d say so for sure. And this is a guy who understands the formula for success in this league. Look around, around the league the teams that are, you know, struggling, they might not have as good of an identity, maybe they don’t have as good of a core of MLS veterans or a good core of Americans or things like that,” Turner said on Sirius XM.

“But I’ve been on teams that have struggled, I’ve been on teams that been on really great streaks. This is the best team I’ve ever been on.”

Sensational season for the New England Revolution

The New England Revolution are the frontrunners for the Supporters Shield as they top the league with a 15-3-4 record (49 points), seven points clear of the Seattle Sounders in the league table. They are a staggering 15 points over Orlando City in the Eastern Conference.

(The bottom three teams in the Eastern Conference combine for 52 points for comparison’s sake).

‘Counter Attack’ airs weekday afternoons and is produced by Andrew Williams.
