Underappreciated right back Olivier Mbaizo got a much-deserved contract extension with the Philadelphia Union, the club announced on Tuesday night. Mbaizo was an influential part of last season’s success as the Union claimed the Supporters Shield, their first trophy in club history.

The 24-year old defender is now in his fourth season in MLS, all with the Philadelphia Union. He has 37 appearances (33 starts) with 2,933 minutes played. He has played nearly the entirety of his time with the Union (and their USL affiliate, Bethlehem Steel) at right back.

“When we signed Olivier, we knew he had the tools to become a top defender in this league and he has emerged as such,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a statement released by the club.

“Our system requires fullbacks to contribute in the attack, defense, and transition and Olivier’s quickness and competitiveness make him a perfect fit for such a role. His continued growth and dedication made this a well-earned contract extension.”

At some point, it seems like Mbaizo will transition from the Philadelphia Union to Europe given his sharpness on the field. A Cameroonian international, he covers ground, overlaps well and closes down space. He has good pace but his technical and tactical ability are what makes Mbaizo one of the best outside backs in the league.

He has made three appearances for Cameroon’s national team.

The Union are the only remaining MLS team in the CONCACAF Champions League. They are currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a 7-5-7 record (28 points).
