How Nashville SC can bounce back from disappointing loss in Miami

3. Stop playing with wingbacks
There is always an odd man out in any of the back-three’s Nashville have played. None of the wingback systems, regardless of who starts out wide, has created a more stable style of play. If anything, the three midfielders bunch together more, causing difficulty to spread the ball wide.
Assuming midfield injuries keep the likes of Brian Anunga and Matt LaGrassa in the squad, it is more advantageous to play a narrower 4-2-3-1 and forfeit the wings. Otherwise Smith forces his wingbacks into 1-on-1’s against Julian Gressel and Joseph Mora, which both will win.
