Don’t forget to check in with New England Revolution for the rest of the season. Then you’ll catch midfielder Carles Gil.

Midfielder Carles Gil will set a new assists record for the MLS regular season. The New England Revolution player takes aim on the league record set back in the year 2000.

That’s when the Tampa Bay Mutiny attacking midfielder  Carlos Valderrama finished the 32-game season with 26 assists. MLS plays an additional two games every regular today. But that won’t take any luster off Gil’s accomplishment should he do it in 34.

After all, the goal of Gil and every other Revs player is to keep the team in first place in the Eastern Conference. Then win out the post-season.

The reason supporters can rest assured they’ll witness the new record is that Gil and the Revs perfectly fit the historical model.

If not a juggernaut in the year 2000, the league-owned Mutiny remained a strong competitor for all comers. They dissolved at the beginning of 2002.

New England is actually much stronger this season than the Mutiny was in that season. This gives the team much leverage in allowing Gil to move into his most comfortable lanes to set up his teammates for scores.

Like Valderrama, he specializes as an attacking midfielder. He has a startling array of strengths, including key passes, crossing, set pieces, and dribbling.

He’s not paid for defense, but with a recent 5-0 shutout over Inter Miami well in hand, he got in some practice.

Gil added two clearances and an interception to the match efforts.

Yet the Revolution team captain remains a specialist in the offense. He re-upped his contract with the team this year through the 2024 season.

Prior to signing in New England as a Designated Player, he had an eight-year career in Spain and England. In that span, he made 182 appearances across all competitions.

He scored his first MLS goal in 2019 playing for New England against Minnesota. He also recorded six chances in that match.

In his third season, he’s approaching 50 appearances, almost all of them starts. In his first 16 games this season, he only subbed off once. He became only the second Revs player to achieve double-digit goals and assists when he claimed the 2019 Golden Boot with the team.

He played all 34 games in that 2019 debut season. He was MLS Newcomer of the Year as well as league Best XI, among other honors.

As he approaches setting a new MLS assists record, Carles Gil is assuring everyone he’s not done making noise in the Beautiful Game.
