Young, MLS heavy team for the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup

The United States national team roster is set for the group stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with Gregg Berhalter going with a roster that is heavy on youth and largely domestic based.

Of the 23 players named to the roster, 19 currently play in MLS.  It is definitely a young and emerging talent pool from which Berhalter has made his roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Three players have never made an appearance with the senior national team: Donovan Pines (D.C. United), Gianluca Busio (Sporting Kansas City), Eryk Williamson (Portland Timbers) and forward Matthew Hoppe.

And the number of players with five or fewer caps is heavy: New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner (one cap), atlanta United left back George Bello (one cap), Tenerife outside back Shaq Moore (five caps), Atlanta United centerback Miles Robinson (three caps), Colorado Rapids left back Sam Vines (three caps), Orlando City forward Daryl Dike (three caps) and Caen forwardNicholas Gioacchini (three caps).

The most veteran player of the group is Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who has 64 appearances with the United States national team.

Of the field players, the likes of Columbus Crew forward Gyasi Zardes (56 caps) and Colorado Rapids midfielder Kellyn Acosta (31 caps) are the most senior selections.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup opens for the United States on July 11 against an opponent that is yet to be determined.
