David Jensen is no longer in MLS, the New York Red Bulls goalkeeper now making a move to Belgium.

Jensen’s new club, KVC Westerlo, currently plays in the Belgium First Division, one step below the top-flite Jupiler League. The loan deal likely signals an end to Jensen’s MLS tour, the goalkeeper having signed with the New York Red Bulls last offseason.

The move was announced on Tuesday morning by his new club team, the deal leading his new club to herald the signing of the goalkeeper. For Jensen, it is a chance to rebound from a difficult stint in MLS and to get regular playing time.

Last year was a rocky debut season in MLS for Jensen, who allowed 15 goals in 11 appearances (10 starts) but struggled with mistakes including several blunders that led to goals. He didn’t make any first team appearances this season for the New York Red Bulls.

The 29-year old Jensen, while never having played with Denmark’s senior national team, has extensive experience at the youth national team level from the U16 group all the way up to the U21 national team.

The goalkeeper position has been a bit of a concern for the New York Red Bulls since Luis Robles left the team following the 2019 season and played one season with then expansion side Inter Miami. The hope was that Jensen, who had a solid reputation at his previous stop in Holland’s top flite with Utrecht, would provide some stability.

It didn’t work out that way and now the Red Bulls rightly moved in a different direction this offseason.

Carlos Coronel, on loan from Red Bull Salzburg, appears to be the current starting goalkeeper for the New York Red Bulls and has been overall solid so far this season. Ryan Meara, who spent the entirety of his MLS career with the Red Bulls since being drafted by the team in 2012 (he was loaned to then expansion side New York City FC in 2015) is also on the roster and is entrenched as the backup.

Meara has yet to play in a regular season match this season.

Coronel has started all seven matches for the New York Red Bulls this season, allowing seven goals. The Red Bulls host Nashville SC this Saturday at Red Bull Arena.
