Three takeaways from Canada’s 4-0 win over Suriname.
The first round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying is in the books. Six countries advanced to the second round of the qualifying campaign including Canada who topped Group B with a 4-0 win over Suriname on Tuesday night.
Canada will now face Haiti for a place in the final phase of qualifying which is set to begin in September. The two countries will play two fixtures on June 12th and 15th to decide who advances. Here are three takeaways from Canada’s victory against Suriname that allowed them to advance to the next round.
Goals galore in the first round
After a strong showing in the first round, one of Canada’s clear strengths is their offensive firepower. They scored an incredible 27 goals in the first round in just four matches and conceded only one goal. This impressive goal-scoring record was by far the highest number of goals scored by any country in the first round. Panama was the next closest country to Canada in goals scored as they registered 19 goals.

Alphonso Davies shines alongside Jonathan David
Davies is certainly capable of causing trouble for any CONCACAF team. He was instrumental in the victory over Suriname as he was involved in three of Canada’s four goals. The Bayern Munich player dribbled his way through the Suriname backline and appeared unstoppable at times. If Haiti struggles to limit Davies’ involvement in creating chances then it could prove to be one of the reasons why Canada advance to the final phase of qualifying.
When it came to scoring goals on Tuesday night, David was in fantastic form. The Lille forward registered a hat-trick to lead the way for Canada. He also registered an assist when he set up Davies’ opening goal of the match and Davies would go on to set up David for two goals of his own. The Davis-David connection was simply superb.
A rematch against Haiti awaits
Tuesday’s victory sets up a rematch against Haiti. The last time Canada faced Haiti was at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. After going up 2-0 in the first half of the quarterfinal match, Canada saw their lead evaporate in the second half as Haiti scored three unanswered goals to shock the Canadians and advance to the semifinals. This will certainly be one of the most intriguing third-round matchups to watch and it promises to be an exciting two legs between the two countries looking to make it to the third round.
