Three takeaways from CF Montreal’s 4-1 win over Toronto FC.
It was a fantastic result for CF Montreal and new manager Wilfried Nancy in the opening match of the 2021 season. They defeated Toronto FC by a comfortable scoreline of 4-2. With four different players contributing goals it was largely a complete team effort that led Montreal to victory in Florida. They jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. Here are three takeaways from Montreal’s first victory of the 2021 campaign.
A complete team effort
Montreal received goals from four different players and assists from four different players. Nancy’s side did not rely on one single player or two players to lead the way to victory against Toronto. This certainly has to be seen as an encouraging sign as the club showed they have the ability to produce goals from different sources.

Last season Montreal only had one match where they registered four goals or more. To record four goals in their first match of the 2021 campaign is a dream start for the Canadian club. It will be interesting to see if they are able to replicate this goal-scoring form in the weeks to come. If so, they could be one of the early surprises of the Major League Soccer season.
Mihailovic scores on debut
Djordje Mihailvoic scored his first goal as a member of Montreal. He produced a great finish in the 71st minute to give Montreal their fourth goal of the match. The offseason signing was one of the notable acquisitions ahead of the 2021 season. Entering this season, the 22-year-old United States international has the potential to be an impactful player for Montreal. His career-best goal tally in MLS is three goals which he recorded in the 2019 season. With his goal on Saturday, he’s already on his way to bettering that tally in the 2021 campaign.

Nancy gets his first win
It didn’t take long for Nancy to record his first MLS victory as the new man in charge at Montreal. His club performed well and they ended up with a rather comfortable victory against their rivals. It certainly wasn’t an easy task to have to face a rival club in his first match in charge. Nancy might just be able to become one of the top new coaches in the league if he’s able to guide Montreal to repeat performances throughout this season.
