New England Revolution: Three key players to watch for in the 2021 season
By Daniel Garza
The New England Revolution produced an impressive postseason run to conclude the 2020 season as they finished just one match shy of reaching the Major League Soccer Cup Final. With most of their key players from last season returning, the Revolution will certainly be another playoff contender in the 2021 campaign. Here are three key Revolution players to watch for in the 2021 season.
Carles Gil
When the Revolution reached the Eastern Conference Final last season, one of the players whose performances were instrumental in that success was Gil. The attacking midfielder recorded two goals and three assists during the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. After being out for the majority of the 2020 regular season, Gil returned to being an impactful player for the Revolution.

In 2021, Gil should be one of the top assist leaders once more in MLS. He recorded 14 assists in his first campaign with the club in 2019 and the coming season could yield even better numbers from the 28-year-old. As long as Gil remains healthy and in the lineup for the Revolution they should have little trouble making the playoffs for a third consecutive season.
Tajon Buchanan
Buchanan was a player who was very impressive during the Revolution’s postseason run in 2020. He was moved to the right-back role by Bruce Arena during the playoffs and thrived at his new position. His speed caused headaches for opposing clubs and it certainly allowed him to get forward from the right-back role. One of his big moments from the playoff run was a goal against the top speeded Philadelphia Union.
After a strong showing at the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Canada, Buchanan certainly appears to be in great form entering the 2021 season. The 22-year-old will be a key player to watch throughout the coming campaign. He is one of the many exciting U23 talents the league currently has, and after his impressive showing in the 2020 postseason, there’s reason to believe 2021 can be an even better year.
Adam Buksa
Buksa finished the 2020 regular season with six goals in 23 appearances. It was a decent first season in MLS for the former Pogon Szczecin player. Although it did not end up being a double-digit goal-scoring season for the striker, 2021 could end being a different story. As long as Gil remains in the lineup then there should be plenty of scoring chances for Buksa. He did not have the talented attacking midfielder to team up with to score goals for a majority of the 2020 campaign. For this reason, it will be interesting to see what type of numbers the 24-year-old will put up in 2021 with the Designated Player creating chances for him.
