USMNT: Josh Sargent sets new career high in Bundesliga
By Daniel Garza
USMNT striker Josh Sargent set a new career high in goals scored in a single Bundesliga season.
It’s been a fantastic last few matchdays in the Bundesliga for United States Men’s National Team striker Josh Sargent. The 21-year old scored his third consecutive goal in the German top flight on Wednesday against Arminia Bielefeld in a 2-0 win for Werder Bremen. His goal against Arminia Bielefeld moves his season total in the Bundesliga to five which is the most goals he’s ever scored in a season.
The USMNT player had registered four goals in 28 appearances during the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign which was his first full season with Werder Bremen’s first team.

When it comes to goals in all competitions, he has also set a career high this season with seven goals scored in the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga combined. Ten matches remain in the German top flight for Werder Bremen and a quarterfinal matchup in the DFB-Pokal against Jahn Regensburg will be played in early April. There will be more opportunities for Sargent to add to his goal total this season in these upcoming fixtures. It appears this could be his first double digit goal scoring season for Werder Bremen and it comes at a crucial point in his career as he just turned 21 in February.
A strong second half
The second half of the Bundesliga season is shaping up to be a breakout portion of the campaign for Sargent. After the halfway point of the season was reached after the conclusion of Matchday 17, he’s scored four goals in his last seven appearances for Werder Bremen. He’s already double the number of goals scored in the second half of the 2019/20 season and he has ten more matches to possibly even score more.
So far Sargent is having one of the best starts to the second half of the season out of all of the USMNT eligible players in the German top flight. After a flurry of goals from Matthew Hoppe in January, his goal production has slowed and now Sargent and Hoppe are level on goals in the Bundesliga with five apiece. Both of these players have bright futures ahead with the national team and it will be interesting to see which player is able to finish as the highest scoring USMNT player in the Bundesliga. As of right now, it appears Sargent is the player who is capable of doing that as he looks to continue his goal scoring form in the second half of the season.
