Memo to New York City FC: Name Maxi Moralez Captain for 2021
Maxi Moralez should be named Captain of New York City FC for the 2021 season
When Maxi Moralez signed for New York City FC in 2017, fans knew they were getting a talented player and a diligent worker. However, no one knew the Argentine would have a tremendous impact on the pitch. No one knew he would be a vital influence in the midfield, have 20 assists in the 2019 regular season, and score some incredible goals throughout his tenure. Additionally, fans did not realize they would love the veteran player as much as they do.
Now, in his final year of his contract, it is clear this will be Moralez’s final season with the Pigeons. Throughout his time in New York City, the 34 year old stressed he wanted to retire in Argentina. In fact, the midfielder recently reiterated this again on a trip home before the start of Major League Soccer’s preseason. More than likely, his last destination will be his first club, Racing Club de Avellaneda. Regardless of his final destination, Moralez wants to retire at home.
Also, Moralez is getting up there in age. He just turned 34-years old on February 27, so it would not be practical to sign another extension with NYCFC since he wants to play in Argentina. He might want to spend a few seasons at his final club, so staying another year in the United States would make that difficult to do. Therefore, it is undeniable: Moralez will play his final season in MLS.
Hence, the Bronx side should make Moralez the captain for the 2021 season. The midfielder has done so much for the club, and he improves those who play around him. He is also a leader on the pitch. Even though Alexander Ring was captain for the last two years, it was apparent Moralez helped in leading the team. He would direct his teammates during matches, and they would look to him as well.
Furthermore, his love and passion for NYCFC is evident. He always has joy when he plays, and never fails to put his blood, sweat, and tears into every game. Moreover, from a fan point of view, he is not problematic. Publicly, he does not complain and does not have drama off the pitch. He seems to genuinely care about others too, which is a quality a captain should have.
Plus, Moralez’s leadership skills and passion is not the only reason he should be named captain for the Pigeons. Truthfully, he outright deserves the role. His talent and resume with NYCFC speaks for itself. He has done so much in the last four years, and arguably is the most critical player to have on the pitch. His playmaking ability is the best in NYCFC’s short history, and then his accuracy in passing keeps the midfield together. His intelligence with key passes leads to numerous goal scoring opportunities as well.
There is no doubt when Maxi Moralez leaves, NYCFC will be losing an important player, and someone who is already a club legend. He deserves to be the captain, and hopefully the club and other players see this as well.
