New York City FC: 3 things club must do before 2021 season
1. Signings, Trades, and Sales: There must be a balance
When there are signings, there are sales and trades. New York City FC has already gotten money for the trades of Ring and Matarrita. The captain’s trade was the most controversial move by the club, and such moves must not be made again this season. Unfortunately, the rumor mill is alive and well.
Back in January, there were rumors about German clubs showing interest in Anton Tinnerholm. Although there were not many, such talk is concerning given the state of the club, and losing the right-back would be a tremendous loss. The team’s MVP in 2020, Tinnerholm is one of the top attacking fullbacks in the league and a fan favorite. The Pigeons must not sell under any circumstance unless it is the player’s wish to move closer to home. Even then, the club should try everything to keep Tinnerholm. Germany’s transfer window might be closed, but other leagues around Europe, like in Sweden and Norway, are still open.
Recently, there have been rumors regarding Valentín Castellanos. Admittedly, when he first signed for NYCFC, he was not that impressive. But then, starting in the 2019 season, he slowly started to prove his worth and talent. And unfortunately for NYCFC fans, it looks like the Argentine forward is one step closer to joining Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras in Brazil.
Now, losing Castellanos, especially with an injured Héber, would be extremely foolish. Truthfully, the 22-year-old should be able to make the jump to a bigger club, but the 2021 season is not the time to do it.
There needs to be a balance when it comes to transfers, sales, and trades. Right now, the scales are tipped out of favor with New York City FC, for both the organization and fans. A talented striker is obviously needed, but the likes of Tinnerholm should not be sold. Yes, the Pigeons must make moves to improve the club, but they cannot and should not sell and trade every fan favorite and starter.
So for now, all fans can do is wait, and hope. The next couple of months will be a long one, and New York City FC must make the correct moves for the team, and the right moves that will please a frustrated fan base.
