Liverpool eyeing New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long
Liverpool is currently running a make-shift defence as they set out to retain the coveted English Premier League title. For a number of games already this season, the Merseyside club has started two centre-midfielders at the back. Can Aaron Long amend these issues?
On Thursday night, Liverpool overcame Tottenham Hotspur 3-1, away from home. In doing so, they lost another centre-back who had already been struggling with injuries during this campaign. Joel Matip had to be substituted at half-time against Spurs, but there’s hope from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp that it’s not as serious as first thought.
Although Joel Matip may not be sidelined for too long, Liverpool is currently without Fabinho, Gomez and Van Dijk. Jordan Henderson has done well in his new temporary role in the backline, and younger prospects have been called upon, but not trusted to remain at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. Klopp has turned his attention to a potential loan swoop for MLS and NYRB defender, Aaron Long.

28-year-old New York Red Bulls centre-back Aaron Long is no stranger to a loan deal. Long was loaned out from Portland Timbers to both the Sacramento Republic and Orange County Blues, where he racked up a total of 5 games between each club.
He then joined Seattle Sounders after being released by the Timbers in 2014, however, he was sent out on loan to Sounders reserve team, Seattle Sounders II, where Long made 22 appearances. Long then moved to the East Coast where he signed for New York Red Bulls II.
Before eventually joining up with the first team in 2017, where Long has now made 105 appearances and become a mainstay in the Red Bulls defence.
Long has also broken his way into the USMNT, featuring 18 times for the national team. His achievements include being named defender of the year in 2018 when he played a crucial role in the Red Bulls only conceding 33 goals during the season.
It’s not often that an English Premier League side looks to MLS to solve their defensive issues. That being said, Aaron Long has worked hard and proved himself capable, should the opportunity arise.
