Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero is eyeing a move to MLS
Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero is eyeing a move to MLS. The veteran is ‘exploring options’ to move over to America, as detailed in a report by The Athletic. He is not ready to hang up his gloves just yet and wants to prolong his career with a switch across the pond.
Caballero, who is 39 years old, is not Chelsea’s first choice and is mainly used as a backup at Stamford Bridge. He is out of contract with the London club at the end of the season and his future appears to lie away from them. He is behind Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order these days.
He joined the Blues in July 2017 and has since made 38 appearances in all competitions for them. The Argentina international had previously moved to England in 2014 and had spent three years on the books at Manchester City, where he helped them win the League Cup in his second season at the club.
Caballero started out at Boca Juniors but moved over to Europe to join Elche. He spent six seasons with the Spanish Segunda Division side before Malaga snapped him up nine years ago. The stopper was a key player for the Anchovies and played in the Champions League for the Costa Del Sol outfit.
He has been a number two over the past few years and may fancy one last go at being a first choice. Caballero is a great option for MLS clubs needing a new goalkeeper for 2021 and is believed to be keen on a move to the league. It will be interesting to see what develops with this story over the next few weeks or so.
