MLS: Carles Gil has been the most impactful player in the playoffs
By Daniel Garza
Carles Gil has been leading the way for the New England Revolution in the MLS playoffs.
The New England Revolution’s playoff run to the Eastern Conference final has been led by Designated Player Carles Gil. In every playoff match so far the Spaniard has had an impact on the result. It’s been quite a remarkable turnaround for Gil who spent the majority of the 2020 Major League Soccer regular season out with an Achilles injury. His return has clearly benefitted the Revolution and it could lead to an MLS Cup title in the near future.
Goals and assists galore
Of the seven goals the Revolution have scored so far in the postseason, Gil has been directly involved in five of those goals. Right from the start of the playoffs, he was making an impact. Against the Montreal Impact, Gil was simply phenomenal. He scored a goal but also had an incredible 10 shot-creating actions according to Football Reference. Throughout this match, Gil was creating chance after chance and it resulted in an opening-round win.

Just four days after the victory over the Impact, he registered two assists against the Philadelphia Union to help pull off the upset against the Supporters Shield winners.
Against the Union, Gil recorded seven shot-creating actions and three goal-creating actions. He went into a match against the MLS’ top club that had yet to lose at home and put together yet another terrific performance.
Gil’s most recent impactful performance was against Orlando City in the Eastern Conference semifinals. In this match, he successfully converted a penalty kick and registered an assist in the 3-1 win on the road.
Once more he recorded impressive numbers when it came to creating opportunities. Gil finished with five shot-creating actions and one goal-creating action. Over the course of the three matches, the total number of shot-creating actions Gil produced was 22. This statistic speaks volumes about the way he has impacted results.
The best player of the postseason
The performances Gil has displayed have set him apart as the best player of the postseason so far. If he can get the Revolution to the MLS Cup final then he should be the outright best player of the playoffs regardless of what the outcome is in the final.
The Revolution were not one of the favorites to advance to the final but Gil has helped lead the way on their incredible underdog run. Now, with just one match separating the Revolution from their first MLS Cup final in six years, Gil has the opportunity to lead the club to a league title. It’s shaping up to be an incredible comeback story from a player who is on his way to becoming a club legend.
