Sporting KC: 4 things to watch for in 2020 MLS Playoffs
By Nathan Dunn
1. Getting by with the defense
Sporting KC’s defensive struggle shave been their greatest problem since letting Ike Opara go after the 2018 season. While 2019 was a complete disaster, Vermes was able to piece together a team good enough to win the Western Conference despite some major defensive issues. The most notable action has been Matt Besler’s absence. The SKC captain seems to be the third choice at the left center back position with Winston Reid the first choice.
SKC seemed to have figured out their defensive woes towards the end of the regular season, which saw them finish the season with three consecutive shutouts. The first choice backline includes Amadou Dia, Winston Reid, Roberto Puncec, and Jaylin Lindsey, who have all surpassed expectations this season. Sporting KC will rely on them to continue their impressive performances to give them a shot at another MLS Cup title.
