By Daniel Garza
Austin FC’s signings are scoring goals and dishing out assists in Paraguay.
The first two signings made by Austin FC are thriving during their time on loan in Paraguay’s top division. Cecilio Dominguez and Rodney Redes are currently with Club Guarani and have been heavily involved in their club’s recent fixtures. Both players have been receiving plenty of playing time in the domestic and continental competitions. With the Paraguayan duo in very good form, they are looking like they will be instrumental players in Austin’s inaugural season in Major League Soccer.
Goals and assists
Dominguez has been one of the best offensive players for Guarani since the resumption of the 2020 season. He has registered two goals and one assist in four appearances in the Copa Libertadores. Domestically, Dominguez has two goals and one assist in four appearances in the Primera Divison Clausura. One of his best performances so far this season came against General Diaz in a 2-0 victory for Guarani. The Austin forward was involved in both of his club’s goals, picking up a goal and an assist in the victory.

Redes has been producing offensively for Guarani as well. He has one goal in the Primera Divison Clausura and two assists in the Copa Libertadores since the resumption of the continental competition.
Both Redes and Dominguez have helped Guarani advance to the Round of 16 in the Copa Libertadores where they will face Gremio. The Copa Libertadores is one of the premier club competitions in the world and playing at this level is very good for Redes’ continued development. This has also benefitted Dominguez who has been thriving in the competition.
Set up for success
Austin’s front office made a great decision to sign these two players ahead of their inaugural campaign in MLS. In Redes, they have an up and coming talent and Dominguez will provide a veteran presence. The goals and assists they’ve been able to produce at Guarani will be an encouraging sign that they can get the job done in MLS. In fact, they have already been linking up for goals. Against General Diaz, Dominguez saw his shot deflected by his teammate Redes and it went into the back of the net.
Dominguez’s recent goal scoring record in a competition such as the Copa Libertadores has been very impressive. He has what it takes to become a top scorer in MLS. His experience playing in Liga MX and Argentina’s Superliga should help him have success in his first season for Austin. Keep an eye on Dominguez and Redes in 2021.
