Striker Aron Johannsson is putting together an impressive season in Sweden
It’s been a while since USMNT forward Aron Jóhannsson has been scoring on a consistent basis. Following an unfortunate series of injuries, the 29-year-old striker has been in good form for Hammarby in Sweden’s top flight. In 15 Allsvenskan appearances, Jóhannsson has scored six goals this season. It’s been a great display of consistency as of late and it could continue as the 2020 campaign continues.
The goals keep coming for Aron Johannsson
This year did not start off the best for Jóhannsson as he failed to score in the Allsvenskan until the 14th match of the season for Hammarby. Since finding the back of the net against Djurgardens, he has gone on to score six goals in his last eight appearances. Hammarby has yet to lose a match that Jóhannsson has scored in. During the domestic cup competition, Jóhannsson found success with three goals in three appearances in the Svenska Cupen. He helped get his club to the quarterfinals where they would exit the competition.

The last time Jóhannsson played in 15 or more matches in a domestic season was in the 2014/15 season for AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie. He’s remained healthy recently and it’s allowed him to unleash a flurry of goals for Hammarby.
With nine matches remaining in the Allsvenskan, this season has the potential to be one of his bests in terms of goal scoring. He scored nine goals in the 2014/15 Eredivisie season and he is nearing that total this year in the Allsvenskan.
A future in the USMNT?
Surprisingly, it’s been five years since Jóhannsson last featured in a match for the USMNT. His last appearance was when he played in a friendly against Brazil in September of 2015. He was called up to the national team in 2018 but had to withdraw due to an injury. Since then, he has not been involved in USMNT selections.
There’s a group of young up and coming strikers in the USMNT player pool at the moment. As a result, it’s unlikely Jóhannsson will get many selections in the coming months. However, there may be opportunities in friendlies or even a CONCACAF Gold Cup, Nations League, or World Cup qualifying match if he is able to remain a productive goal scorer.
One of the weak points the USMNT has is at striker. They do not have the depth that other nations have. if there is an injury to one of the top forwards in the player pool, then Jóhannsson may be one of the players to step in. For this reason, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Jóhannsson could see a future appearance.
