It was late, but it was great for the Philadelphia Union, who needed a 95th minute winner to down New England Revolution on Saturday evening. They kept up their push for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
After Matt Polster was shown a red card before the hour mark, the Union had the advantage and took the lead through Anthony Fontana. They were pegged back with less than ten minutes to go, but Fontana struck again in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure the win.
Those three points keep them hot on the heels of Columbus Crew, who continue to lead the way in the East, and the Supporters’ Shield standings. Philadelphia are 3rd in both and faces a tough test this weekend as they travel north to Montreal on Sunday evening.

MLS Power Rankings: 2. Toronto FC (=)
In their final match of the ‘Canadian swing’, Toronto FC took another victory to maintain the pressure on the league-leading Crew. They closed the gap to just three points at the top of both the East and the Supporters’ Shield standings.
Goals from Pablo Piatti and Jozy Altidore gave the 2017 treble-winners the W over Montreal Impact, with the latter scoring in the 89th minute to seal the win. Their sheer dominance over their Canadian rivals continues.
TFC hold on to 2nd place, and are now just three points behind the Crew. A big victory against D.C. United next Saturday afternoon could be enough to take them to the top of the table, depending on goal difference.
This Week’s Fixtures: @ D.C. United (Sat 19, 7:30 pm ET)
MLS Power Rankings: 1. Columbus Crew SC (=)
They may have only taken a point from their fixture on Saturday evening, but the Columbus Crew remain unchanged at the top of both the league table and our Power Rankings for a second week in a row.
The Crew faced off against Chicago Fire on Saturday, with second-half goals from Fatai Alashe and Gyasi Zardes rescuing them from a perilous 2-0 down situation, having conceded twice in the opening 15 minutes of the match.
The recovery sees them maintain their unbeaten run, which now stretches to four games, and they hold on to a three-point lead at the top of the Eastern Conference, and the Supporters’ Shield standings. The tests don’t stop coming though, as they do battle with in-form Nashville SC on Saturday evening.
This Week’s Fixtures: vs. Nashville SC (Sat 19, 7:30 pm ET)
