USMNT abroad: Tyler Adams and Josh Sargent shine in the DFB-Pokal

Tyler Adams and Josh Sargent produced Man of the Match performances in the DFB-Pokal.

The German domestic cup kicked off this past weekend with the Bundesliga clubs in action. This meant there were numerous USMNT players involved in the DFB-Pokal fixtures. Two USMNT players who stood out above the rest were RB Leipzig’s Tyler Adams and Werder Bremen’s Josh Sargent.

DFB-Pokal success

Adams produced a fantastic performance for Leipzig against Nürnberg. He was a very influential player in the match. Of the 94 passes he attempted, 88 reached a teammate which helped Leipzig control the possession. As a result of his efforts, Adams was awarded as the Man of the Match.

Elsewhere in the DFB-Pokal, Sargent helped lift Bremen to a 2-0 victory by scoring the first goal of the match. It was a great start to the season for the American striker as he was named the Man of the Match for his impact on the outcome.

Another notable performance in the DFB-Pokal came from Julian Green. He registered a goal and an assist for Greuther Furth in a wild 6-1 victory against Meinzerhagen. His American teammate Timothy Tillman registered two assists. This match was tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes and Greuther Furth unleashed five unanswered goals in extra time.

Boyd scores a stunner

Tyler Boyd produced a terrific strike for Beşiktaş in their opening match of the Turkish Super Lig season. His first-half goal helped Beşiktaş take a 3-1 win against Trabzonspor. It was certainly the top goal scored by a USMNT player abroad so far this season.

Other USMNT eligible players to score this weekend included Luca de la Torre for Heracles Almelo and Haji Wright for SønderjyskE Fodbold. Although it wasn’t a league match, Boavista’s new signing Reggie Cannon scored in a friendly for the Portuguese club. It was an impressive performance for the former FC Dallas player.

Other notable performances

Timothy Weah made a brief appearance for Lille in the second half entering as a substitute in the 83rd minute. Lille ended up winning the Ligue 1 match 1-0 courtesy of a late 88th-minute goal from Luiz Araujo.

Tim Ream started Fulham’s first match back in the Premier League and played the entire 90 minutes. However, the end result was a resounding 3-0 victory for Arsenal as Fulham will have to wait another week for their first points in the EPL. Sergino Dest entered in the 33rd minute of Ajax’s 1-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam to help the Dutch club earn their first victory of the Eredivisie season.

In the DFB-Pokal, Alfredo Morales went 78 minutes for Fortuna Düsseldorf in their 1-0 victory against Ingolstadt. Timothy Chandler made a second-half appearance off the bench in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2-1 win over 1860 Munich.
