USWNT star striker Alex Morgan will be headed to FA WSL club Tottenham Hotspur.
The trend of United States Women’s National Team players joining FA Women’s Super League clubs continues. Alex Morgan will become the fifth USWNT player to make the move to England. She will join Tottenham Hotspur for the 2020-21 season as announced by the club.
Recently, USWNT players Tobin Heath and Christen Press signed with Manchester United. They joined their USWNT teammates Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis who already had signed with in-city rivals Manchester City in August.
Morgan is currently a member of the Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League. The Pride already have a pair of players competing for Tottenham on loan. Shelina Zadorsky and Alanna Kennedy joined in August from the Florida club.
With a reduced NWSL schedule in 2020, the move to England is offering USWNT players a better chance of getting regular appearances and keeping them ready for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan next summer.
Another European appearance for Alex Morgan
This won’t be the first time Morgan has played overseas in Europe. In 2017 she spent time playing with Lyon in France on loan. She had very good success with the French club, scoring 12 goals in 16 appearances and winning the UEFA Champions League title.

Upon returning to the NWSL for the 2017 season, Morgan produced one of her best seasons to date in the league. She went on to score nine goals in 13 regular-season appearances for the Pride and clearly benefitted from her time spent with Lyon. Based on her past appearance in Europe, going on loan to Tottenham promises to be a very beneficial time for her as she returns to play.
A star player for Tottenham
Tottenham will benefit immensely from having Morgan on the squad. The club has struggled to match the offensive production of the other FA WSL clubs at the top and the American striker can help give them a boost in goal scoring. Tottenham needs a consistent source of goals which offers Morgan the opportunity to be impactful upon arrival.
This is just the second season for Tottenham in the top flight. They are a growing club in women’s soccer and Morgan will be the highest-profile acquisition to date for Tottenham. As a result, she will get plenty of playing time against clubs with top talent. This should be a great move for the striker and help in the preparation for the 2021 NWSL season and the Olympic Games.
Morgan still remains one of the most clinical strikers in the world as she has scored over 100 goals for the USWNT. The FA WSL is getting yet another top-quality USWNT player in Morgan as the league continues to grow into an emerging hub for international players.
