MLS: Top 5 performers that dominated from the past week
By Matt Coles
Here are the top five MLS players that dominated last week
It was a great week for the likes of the Philadelphia Union and New York City FC, with both Eastern Conference sides taking a full six points from their two matches. One member of both squads makes our top five this week as it also made some big changes to the latest MLS Power Rankings.
Andre Blake almost made his way onto the list once again, as the Union shot-stopper made a total of seven saves and kept a clean sheet, as his side won twice. Elsewhere, New England’s star man, Gustavo Bou, scored in both matches for them this week, but he just missed out on making the top five. Who makes it in? Find out here.
5. Jordan Morris
The Sounders took revenge over Los Angeles FC at the weekend, as they got their own back for a 4-1 defeat to the reigning Supporters’ Shield holders in the round of 16 at the MLS is Back tournament last month.
The script was flipped this time around, as it was the reigning MLS Cup champions that took a comfortable victory, winning 3-1 at CenturyLink Field on Sunday evening, thanks to a quick-fire double from Jordan Morris. The Rave Green had taken an early lead thanks to a Raul Ruidiaz stunner before the USMNT star took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored twice in the space of 59 seconds.

For his first goal, Morris was sent through by Nicolas Lodeiro with a wonderful through ball. He then took it past the on-rushing Kenneth Vermeer before slotting the ball home into an empty net.
He second came just a minute later, as Seattle pounced to get the ball back from the kickoff, with Joao Paulo advancing down the right-hand side. His ball into the box found Morris, who deftly finished into the top corner to give Seattle a three-goal cushion. The Sounders did concede on the hour mark but held on to a 3-1 victory, which sees them move into 2nd spot in the Western Conference.
4. Darwin Quintero
Coming into their seventh match of the 2020 Major League Soccer season, the Houston Dynamo were still looking for their first victory, and they got it in some style against Sporting Kansas City.
The Dynamo put five past the Western Conference leaders on Tuesday night, in what was their only match of the week, with former Minnesota United man Darwin Quintero being the star of the show. The Colombian midfielder set up the first goal, after he cut inside from the left channel, before a shot-cum-cross fell to the feet of Alberth Elis, with the Honduran striker making it 1-0.

Following a pair of goals from both sides, and with the score sitting precariously at 3-2 to the Dynamo, Quintero stepped up to score twice in four second-half minutes.
His first goal gave Houston a cushion, as he linked up with namesake Darwin Ceren, before taking it past a Sporting defender and finishing into the bottom corner to make the score 4-2. He then bagged a second just a few minutes later with a composed finish past the goalkeeper to round out the match.
Now Houston have their first victory of the season, they will be looking to kick on. They are off the bottom of the Western Conference and are now just a point below the playoff places.
