USMNT’s Antonee Robinson is set to join the Premier League

Antonee Robinson‘s eventual departure at Wigan Athletic has reportedly arrived. Sky Sports is reporting Sheffield United had a £2 million bid accepted to acquire Robinson. The 23-year-old has been rumored to be joining various clubs since the start of 2020.

Sheffield will provide Robinson with his first opportunity to play in the Premier League. He had started his career with Everton but he did not make an appearance in England’s top division for them. The left-back joined Wigan on a permanent deal in July of 2019 after spending a season on loan with them the previous year. He went on to make 65 appearances for Wigan over the course of his time with the club.

Back In January of 2020, Robinson appeared to be headed to AC Milan. Unfortunately, the transfer did not come to fruition and Robinson remained at Wigan for the duration of the 2019-20 season. Despite the failed transfer, it seemed only a matter of time before he landed at a club in a top league.

Antonee Robinson will be a good pickup for Sheffield

For Sheffield, the acquisition of Robinson will provide depth at left-back. Irish international Enda Stevens is the current go-to player at left-back but Robinson has the potential to compete for the starting role ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

Robinson, who is just 23, is a player for the future for Sheffield as well. He may become the outright starter at left-back in the seasons to come. As a result, this appears to be a good move for him.

Internationally, this should help Robinson gain valuable experience playing in one of the world’s top leagues. He is certainly going to improve at Sheffield and this should help his chances of making the United States Men’s National Team roster for the 2022 World Cup.

If all goes well, Robinson will contribute to further improving the USMNT defensively in the years to come.
