Inter Miami: 3 ways how Blaise Matuidi will improve the team
By Alex Windley
1. Tactical flexibility
Diego Alonso is a coach that likes to be tactically flexible. During Inter Miami’s first five games, Alonso shifted back a forth from a 3-4-3 to 4-2-3-1 with several iterations of those formations in between. Midgames the Uruguyan will often switch things up, substituting off a defender or holding midfielder in favor of two attacking players if the team is down a goal.

With a player like Blaise Matuidi, Inter Miami now has a player that can play multiple positions if he’s asked to. So far in his career, Matuidi has played as a: left-back, left midfielder, a center midfielder, and a defensive midfielder.
For Inter Miami, his swiss army knife life qualities will serve the team well. He’ll give Diego Alonso the ability to tinker with the formation mid-game if the match calls for it.
Matuidi’s presence on the left-hand side will also free up players like Ben Sweat and Matias Pellegrini who have the tendency to fly up the pitch but have also been caught out of position on multiple occasions.
His work rate, tackling ability and defensive positioning should see the left-hand side open up a bit more for Miami. The 33-year-old will prove to be an excellent signing for the South Florida club. Not only is he precisely the type of midfielder the team needs, but he also brings experience and a winning mentality to a team that’s desperate to get their first win.
