Throughout the match, they struggled to get Brenden Aaronson in the game. The young American was largely stifled by the excellent Diego Chara. Kacper Przybylko was poor as the Union’s spearhead of the attack, failing to convert several chances and suffering a number of loose touches, while their domination of central midfield in possession led to few chances created.
However, while the Union’s performance on the night was poor, it does not reflect on their entire competition. In fact, the Union have been one of the better performers in the MLS is Back Tournament. This was their first loss of the competition and their dismantling of Sporting KC in the quarter-finals was one of the performances of the last month.
A young team that has increasingly handled the expectation of being the favourite, this was a big step in the right direction for the Philadelphia Union. Ultimately, the Timbers’ experience was the difference, but the Union have enjoyed an excellent tournament and can hold their heads high.
