2. Union attack revived

The Philadelphia Union attack was at its best on Thursday night, especially when breaking forward on the counter-attack.

More from MLS Multiplex

The first goal, which was all created after Alejandro Bedoya found Aaronson to break past the initial press from SKC, was wonderful. From there, Bedoya made a quick and aggressive run to receive the ball before dishing it to the far post for a simple finish from Jamiro Monteiro. A second goal on the counter-attack was executed to perfection from Sergio Santos, who had a 65-yard sprint with just three touches to put a second past Tim Melia, before Aaronson’s assist set up Santos’ brace for the third.

Even with how silent Kacper Przybylko was, they still found ways to attack quickly and swiftly on the counter-attack. Santos displayed his speed and endurance, and the midfield was both positionally disciplined without the ball and then direct and explosive with it once they forced a turnover.

With a defense as good as they get in MLS and a team that looked deadly on transitions can easily find themselves crowned champions by the tournament’s conclusion. Jim Curtin seems to have all the right pieces together to build a team that is plenty capable of winning this tournament.
