MLS: Here come the St. Louis Lazer Snakes
Fans and keen graphic designers got involved with the branding for future MLS club, St. Louis. The results were enjoyable, to say the least.
In a couple of weeks, we will find out the official name of the new St. Louis Major League Soccer club. And this week, the club’s official Twitter account asked for people’s suggestions on what the name might be.
If you love quirky ideas for a brand new football club, you’ll love the possibility of an MLS side called the ‘St. Louis Kicky McKickertons’. Or how about ‘St. Louis Trash Pandas’?

No? Okay, I understand. The first name seems perfect for a team which represents an elementary school and the second is more of an amateur weekend league, team name. Instead, let me for a second talk about the possibility of the ‘St. Louis Lazer Snakes’. It has all the feel of ‘Sharknado’ and ‘Snakes On A Plane’ but for a serious, professional MLS club, instead of Hollywood.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, there is no way that a group of people who have pulled this club together, succeeded in becoming an expansion team, and now are under two years away of kicking off in the MLS for 2022, would defeat themselves by naming it any of those before mentioned titles. And of course, you would be right. But they are just some of the suggestions that fans provided when St. Louis MLS club’s Twitter account asked fans to get involved with the branding. It shared some of their favourite responses, of which these were included. You can see the names, colour schemes and logo designs here.
St. Louis may not arrive in MLS until 2022, but they’re story in some ways already began in 2007, when Real Salt Lake founder announced he would sell the club if a new stadium was not built for RSL. This prompted a St. Louis group, lead by a local lawyer Jeff Cooper, to push for an expansion team in the greater St. Louis region. However, it wasn’t until 2017 when MLS actually started to take the idea of a team in St. Louis, seriously.
Eventually, after a long and arduous bidding process, on 30th August 2019, St. Louis was approved as an expansion side to the MLS. The club will play their games in a soccer-specific stadium with a 22,500 capacity. It’s a stadium that’s been tipped to rejuvenate downtown St. Louis and it’s scheduled to be completed in time for the club’s arrival to the league.
I just personally hope they don’t tarnish what will be 13 years of hard work and complications to get this far alone, with the name ‘St. Louis Kicky McKickertons’. I’m more of a Lazer Snakes fan. Bite Venom into rivals and Lazer down opposition keepers. Too much? Maybe. Irrespective of the name, though, MLS is arriving in St. Louis and it’s time to get excited.
