The Chicago Red Stars took down Sky Blue FC in the NWSL Challenge Cup semi-final in a 3-2 victory. Here are three things we learned.

After a long NWSL Challenge Cup, filled with a lack of goals, the Chicago Red Stars have finally broken through, squeezing past Sky Blue FC in a 3-2 win. Bianca St. Georges opened the scoring in the 8th minute, before then teeing up Rachel Hill to double the lead minutes later.

Savannah McCaskill then added a third in the second half, before the Red Stars hung on to deny Sky Blue’s late rally. After a tense final 10 minutes, the Chicago Red Stars confirmed their place in the NWSL Challenge Cup final.

3. Bianca St. George stars

If there is one Chicago Red Stars player who has earned their way to a starting role, it’s Bianca St. Georges. Drafted in 2019 but never actually with a chance to play for the first team, she has flourished in this tournament, providing opportunities in every appearance.

While her finishing has been a little wasteful, it was only a matter of time for her to convert on her chances. St. Georges has played every game with a true Chicago-style intensity and drive. Her physical battle with Sofia Huerta in the quarter-finals was emblematic of her aggressive style. This time, she added substance.

St. George provided the opening goal and two assists. She was directly involved in all three of the Red Stars goals. With the final now just around the corner, expect to see St. Georges’ breakout competition continue.
