2. Whitecaps had no answers

It was telling how the first half ended. With seconds remaining, the Vancouver Whitecaps players passed and passed the ball around the edge of the Seattle Sounders box. They failed to deliver a cross into the box and prompted the referee to blow his whistle for halftime.

It was a wasteful period of possession that only magnified how terrible their performance was. The broadcast had mentioned the players that missed out on the tournament due to varying reasons, including new DP signing Lucas Cavallini and Tosaint Ricketts, who scored Vancouver’s only goal of their opening two 2020 regular-season matches before lockdown. Their absences showed throughout.

Things got worse as starting goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau went off injured. Crepeau is one of the best goalkeepers in MLS and arguably Vancouver’s best player — that the goalkeeper is the Whitecaps’ elite player says a lot. 21-year-old Thomas Hasal made his tournament debut.

The defending for Seattle’s third goal showed lack of fundamentals as if they didn’t want to be there. Nothing has worked for Vancouver who are lifeless and are now last in their group, winless from two games. The 4-3 loss to San Jose broke the camel’s back and they now face a Chicago side buoyed by the chance to advance out of the group.
