There were plenty of shocks, spoils and goals in the second round of group matches in MLS is Back, but who produced the best performances?

Four teams have made their way through to the knockout stages of the MLS is Back Tournament already, with two of those coming from Group A, in the Philadelphia Union and Orlando City. The Columbus Crew and Portland Timbers are the other sides who have already made it through to the knockout stages after just two matches in the group stages. But none of those four teams has a player that features in our top five performers of the second round of matches.

There is a different twist to this week’s top five, with a team making it, along with a pair of players who performed well together en route to a victory for their side.

Here is our top five from matchday two of the MLS is Back Tournament.

5. Saphir Taider

It is a rare occasion that a player who ended up on the losing side of a match gets into our top five performers but Montreal’s Saphir Taider scored twice in a 4-3 defeat against Toronto FC on Thursday evening.

The Algerian international scored twice for the Impact and his performance was only outshone by another man who will feature on this later on, as he scored a hat-trick for TFC.

Montreal were 2-1 down when Taider scored his first goal of the game, following goals from Richie Laryea and Ayo Akinola for Toronto, with Romell Quioto keeping the Impact close by. Taider scored from the spot to make it 2-2.

The Algerian then scored a second penalty kick late into stoppage time, but it was unfortunately not enough for the Impact, who succumbed to a 4-3 defeat in arguably the wildest game of the MLS is Back tournament yet.
