2. Dynamo undone by Timbers’ experience
Much of the talk going into this game was how the Houston Dynamo would attack a Timbers team that is both compact and clinical. Memo Rodriguez scored a brace against Los Angeles FC and it was hoped that he could again hurt one of the elite Western Conference teams.

On this occasion, the Dynamo attack that looked so bright and vivacious against LAFC was thwarted. Rodriguez did little but earn a yellow card and be substituted. Alberth Elis scored a penalty but also blew a big chance in the first half, shooting his uncontested effort wide of the far post and then sent off.
Mauro Manotas, meanwhile, couldn’t get into the game which played right into the Timbers’ hands, using their experience to nullify their opponents. Timbers were compact, closed down passing lanes in the middle, and forced Houston to play out wide. The gameplan worked to a tee.
There were some positives for Tab Ramos’ side. They can create chances, especially on the counter-attack, but they need to be more clinical in front of goal. The potential is there and as time goes on, Houston will be a tough opponent against anyone. But for now, Ramos will have to keep waiting for his victory as coach.
